Tyler, THANK YOU!!! Your timing is impeccable! We were just having the solo shower conversation this morning and I was wondering how to set our 7 year up for success and saw this! So glad you’re on here bc I’m off FB/IG for my physical/mental health and there are things I missed like your IG posts. “I do, we do, you do” is such a powerful mantra and I’m definitely going to subscribe, and I still gotta get around to reading your book! That’s what summers are for, I’ll get there. Thanks again, Adele
How to apply serum! It’s too tricky to apply it from a dropper without it running down your face. Plus you can’t see your face when you have to tip your head back. Solution? Apply the drop(s) to the back of your hand, then dab it on your face with a finger. Extra bonus is your hands get the benefit of the serum too!
How to wash all your parts in the shower ... and rinse them well. Taking a shower isn't the same as sitting and soaking in a tub. And certain parts are harder to rinse in a shower than a bath tub.
Also, the importance of getting the shampoo and conditioner rinsed thoroughly out of your hair when the child is old enough to shower themself.
So maybe my main point is learning how to thoroughly rinse oneself off. It's not as easy as one thinks.
The proper way to brush teeth. Back in high school even had a fellow classmate who did a verbal process essay from their dentist of the right way to brush your teeth. It’s a whole thing.
Side note: super excited for the shower chart. I have a 6 year old this will be great for!
Side side note: do you have a bedtime chart that you do with your girls? Now, off to check old Substack posts to see if you already addressed this. Thanks for sharing!
And my book Tidy Up Your Life has a section on our great bedtime shuffle routine. We also use a checklist on the fridge with sliding checkmarks for their morning routine, and it would work well for a nighttime routine too! https://amzlink.to/az0ziJmZrLxdI
This is great! I’ve been having so many conversations with my 8 year old about making sure he is truly cleaning himself in the shower. I got him a scalp scrubber for his hair and that has helped him a lot with making sure his hair is actually clean.
Yesss this is so helpful. We’ve been starting to teach our 7yo daughter how to clean herself and this is exactly what we need! I would like to add to use a wet brush when the conditioner is in before rinsing for my daughter but otherwise perfect. Thanks Tyler!
The shower school idea is amazing! I can’t tell you how many times one of my kids gets out of the shower and they still have stinky feet and have to go back and try again 😝
Rinsing hair! This is a huge work in progress with our 8-year-old. In fact, because we're starting to move into the tween stage, I think we're going to use your shower school lesson and syllabus. What a great idea!
Love the school concept!

Thank you! I love the Substack platform for sharing more writing! And my book talks a bit more about the “I do, we do, you do” strategy too!

Love this! We used lots of charts as our kids were growing up! You are Emily are on the path to successful, and clean, kids! 😂

Checklist is brilliant!! Combing while in the shower helps with uber tangles.

Oh that’s great! I’ve only got through the intro so far, so will go back and look up that section in the table of contents. Thanks!
It's near the end of chapter 3 - "Find Your Rhythm and Make it Routine"
How to really brush their teeth 😣

Brushing your hair through the tangles even if it hurts! Both daughters needed a lot of assistance with this!
